Project  AMAN

This project revolves around people who are displaced and the disassociation of the ‘stranger’ in a new land. Stranger being student migrants who are not in their home country as they pursue their studies. The stress of migration process and having smaller social networks and support leads to depression and possible mental illness. Under this circumstance, student migrants often feel detach in the new environment they reside in. In order to cope with these feelings, they tend to give meaning to spaces in the city that reminds them of home through interpretive cognitive processes. The project aims to provide a representation of a ‘stranger’ in a new land and the associated mental illness. Interpretive measures were taken through the feelings and personal experiences shared by 10 project friends by making abstract representation in different forms, objects, and unworldly spaces. The intention of this project is for the ‘stranger’ to be able to relate to these spaces and the public to understand the depth emotions of being in a new environment. These spaces also create threshold for people to feel secure contemplating about their own mental state and a point of reaching out in hopes to build a stronger social network in the community and a better understanding of each other. Hence achieving the state of Aman. Aman is an Arabic word which means peace, safety, sureness, and trust and used in the Malay language to describe living together in harmony.
